Treatment
The main treatment modalities used at Acupuncture Healing Arts are acupuncture, herbal medicine, and nutritional counseling.
Before having your first acupuncture treatment or herbal medicine consultation you will fill out a health history form. In order to make a proper diagnosis the acupuncturist will go over this form in detail, ask additional questions, look at your tongue, and feel pulses on both wrists. Palpation of your abdomen and points on your body are also part of the examination. Because Chinese medicine takes into account the relationship of the mind and the body questions regarding your emotional state will also be covered. All of these steps are important tools to aid in making a proper diagnosis and treatment plan that addresses both the causes and symptoms of your particular imbalances.
The initial visit can last from an hour to an hour and a half, and includes an acupuncture treatment lasting another 30-60 minutes. Your subsequent visits will shorter in duration - usually an hour long. We make a short review of your progress followed by the acupuncture treatment.
If appropriate, we will also prescribe an herbal formula. Acupuncture Healing Arts has an herbal pharmacy on the premises. Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture are often combined together for a variety of medical conditions. Herbal medicinals are prescribed in formulas (a combination of herbs used together) to create a unique and synergistic affect. The effectiveness of herbal medicine comes from the flexibility to adjust formulas to address individual needs.
Typically acupuncture treatments are given once a week. If the condition is acute and painful, treatments may be given 2-3 times per week until the condition starts to come under control. The exact duration of treatment depends on the condition, your basic level of health, and how well you respond to acupuncture.
